A male wild turkey in falling snow

Wild Turkey

Boucherville, Québec

It's one of our most common game birds and doesn't usually count as a good reason to spend an afternoon taking pictures, but finding the local wild turkey flock foraging in a field under falling January snow still got me outside, into the cold-weather gear, and on the ground with my camera and a zoom lens. While another photographer in the same field was contending with a rusty blackbird that landed directly on his camera, I was snapping shots of this handsome tom turkey in the snow. The blackbird never did offer a perched shot, but the turkeys were more than happy to pose. In the right light and setting, even a nondescript or "boring" species can be pretty.
