American Wigeon
St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador
Sometimes the subject you want can be right in front of you, but the subject you get is something entirely different. The main draw of shooting winter ducks in Newfoundland is the presence of several rarities, European species like Eurasian wigeon and tufted duck that almost never appear elsewhere in North America. But just because the ducks are there, it doesn't mean that getting photos of them will be guaranteed, especially when there's a mallard mafia on the pond you're trying to shoot at. Unfortunately for me, even though there were several tufted ducks in attendance, the limited open water and large numbers of other species turned the pond into a complete mosh pit, with every tufted duck blocked by multiple mallards and American wigeons. What few open shooting lanes there were never went more than a second or two before something else (usually a mallard) swam over and got between my subject and the camera. And so, what was supposed to be a tufted duck session turned into a shoot-whatever-finds-the-open-water session, and this American wigeon hen was one of the only birds that obliged.
