The moment I got wind of great grey owls hanging around the provincial capital of Québec City, I was in the car on my first free day, hoping to snag a card-full of images. But when I arrived, no such luck: a great horned owl had run the great greys off, and now there wasn't so much as a chickadee to photograph. I went home with an empty memory card and fifty fewer dollars after filling the tank back up, and assumed that was the end of that. About two weeks later, however, I learned that the owls were back, and I went back up the A-20 expressway to find them. It wasn't the kind of day that I'd usually take pictures during the winter season: bright and clear, without a single cloud in the sky. That sort of weather cuts the really good shooting conditions down from hours to around thirty minutes around sunrise and sunset for that magical "golden hour" light, so for a while, I simply waited as the sun slipped lower in the sky, observing the owls and seeing where they landed. By the time I got this image, the sun was already below the tree line at my back, leaving the owl in a shadow while lighting up the woods in the distance with a full-strength sunset. And for a moment, I had ice and fire, glace et feu —and a great grey owl— together in the same photograph.
