A great grey owl perched on a branch in the purple light of a fading sunset.

Dernières Lueurs

Québec City, Québec

The sun was already diving below the horizon, and there wasn't a single photon of direct light touching the entire field where this great grey owl was beginning her nighttime hunt. Tripod use went from a good idea to mandatory as shutter speeds dipped under 1/400 with the lens aperture wide open, and thanks to the historically frigid winter, the cold was doing a proper number on my fingers, even with proper gloves on. But staying after the sunset for the very last flashes of daylight, les dernières lueurs or "afterglow" in French, had its own benefits: not ten minutes after the distant treeline had been lit up in brilliant golden orange, the same background had become almost purple as the light grew progressively weaker. At the very top of the frame, just a touch of that sunset orange remained in the highest parts of the background, while everything else was enveloped in the colder blue hour twilight. For those few moments, the owl's yellow eyes were the brightest thing in the image.
