A juvenile red-shouldered hawk works the fence line, backlit by the setting October sun. The peak fall colors had come and gone by this point, but enough leaves remained on the trees to provide a beautiful mix of orange, red, and green behind the hawk. The posts continue in an s-curve around and behind the subject, where they blur into the rest of the background.
Unlike many of the raptors that I have encountered, this one here could not have possibly cared less about the human presence in the park, and spent the better part of forty-five minutes hopping all the way down the line of posts, pausing on each for a few minutes, looking over the ground below, and then continuing on to the next spot. Eventually, he flew down and pounced on an unfortunate vole, which he took into a tall tree. It was practically like having my own private raptor show, only the bird was completely wild.
