Lesser Scaup
Cambridge, Maryland
An unusually calm evening in early spring finds a male lesser scaup paddling through pastel blue water on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Lesser scaups are plentiful here, but they present a challenge all their own that has little to do with finding them: the drakes have jet-black feathers on the neck, head, and breast. If the light isn't at just the right angle, those darkest areas can,and often do, block up, leaving nothing but a mass of pure black with no detail whatsoever. Getting low to the ground and shooting with the sun directly behind the camera are both helpful, but I've found that the trick with this species is to wait for the golden hour to start, at which point the sunlight comes in from low enough to bring out the detail that would otherwise stay hidden, including the slight iridescence behind the eyes. When all the elements come together, it makes the hours spent face down in the sand all worthwhile.
