An American coot swimming in colorful water

American Coot

Sainte-Foy, Québec

When life gives you coots, take pictures of them! I went to this pond near Québec City in search of wood ducks in fall foliage reflections. There wasn't a single wood duck on the pond, and the ring-necked ducks that had been at petting distance a week or so prior to my visit were now well into the open water, far past where even my long lens and teleconverter could create good images. But as luck would have it, an American coot was on the scene as well, and he seemed to love the camera, constantly swimming back and forth through the colorful water. These birds are rails, not ducks, but after a three-hour drive from Montréal, I wasn't about to start splitting hairs that fine.
