River Song
Sainte-Martine, Québec
Only in the bird world, where species are named by committee and seldom given second thought, is a species with a bill this long considered "short-billed". If not for the long-billed dowitcher, which is more common in the western half of North America and does indeed have a longer bill, I doubt this bird would be called what it is.
While the short-billed is almost a point-and-shoot species on the Florida coast, in the Montréal area, it is seldom seen except as a southbound migrant. As they make their way from the Arctic towards the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, first-winter juveniles will stop over at ponds, lakes, rivers, and wetlands that can offer food, water, and shelter. One such place that attracts shorebirds year after year is the site of an old hydroelectric dam in the town of Sainte-Martine, about half an hour south of the city of Montréal on the Châteauguay River. Once used to produce electricity, the dam now safeguards an area of shallow water that attracts migratory birds year after year. After seeing an eBird report, I took the camera to the river after work, waded in, and found the dowitcher mingling with a small flock of lesser yellowlegs. A burst-fire when he started calling, usually in response to the yellowlegs all around him doing the same, yielded this image.
