A female green-winged teal preening against a black background

New York, New York

It's common later in the year to get stuck waiting for the sun to get above the trees, but it's not every day that the same problem arises due to the New York City skyline. When I took this picture, the buildings along Central Park West were still blocking some of the morning light, and only allowing a narrow ribbon through. That limited sunshine was enough to fall on the preening teal hen without illuminating the shore behind her, leaving me with a light-on-dark composition that highlights the subject, the patterns in the water around her, and absolutely nothing else.
