A cloudy October day with fading fall reflections in the water sees a common loon, molted into his brown winter plumage and just about ready to migrate away for the season, taking a last paddle around the lake. The bird will wear this plumage through the winter season, changing back into the more familiar black and white once early spring arrives and it's time to re-establish breeding territories on the lakes and ponds of the Northeast.
