Serene Green
Grantham, New Hampshire
The ideal conditions for loon photography are a windless, sunny morning or evening, when the early- or late-day light brings out all the details in the bird and fills the water with golden reflections of the surrounding trees. No waves keep the bird and the kayak that holds me and my camera from bouncing around in choppy water, and preserve the biggest washes of green color in the reflections. Loons generally don't care one way or the other, since their main concern is catching fish for themselves and their young as opposed to sitting pretty for the local photographers, but if one of those camera-bearing kayaks does happen to draw close, they hardly pay much attention, having figured out long ago that a human floating along in a glorified plastic bucket isn't going to pose a threat. It's a rare opportunity in the bird photography world to shoot a subject that's utterly unconcerned with your presence.
The day I photographed this loon, New Hampshire was suffering through a heat wave, and I was trying to fight off a cold. I got in the kayak against my better judgment, thinking it would be a pretty miserable shoot, all things considered. Instead, I spent the entire evening taking pictures of a cooperative bird in golden sunset light. Every once in a while, things can work out like that!
