The arrival of this American oystercatcher's mate spurred both birds into a frenzy of calling and posturing. A nest with two chicks on a Gulf of Mexico beach was keeping the parent birds busy with feeding duties, requiring them to constantly fly off to the nearby tidal areas in search of small shellfish to bring back for the hungry babies. Most of the time that they spend looking for food, there was little to no interaction between them, but on this one occasion, the female flying in and landing caused the male to put on an impressive and loud display, complete with raised tail and plenty of high-pitched calls. It only lasted for a few seconds, after which time the two adults went back to probing the sand for food.
