A male pyrrhuloxia standing on a cactus stump at sunrise

Pyrrhuloxia

Green Valley, Arizona

Sunrise glow lights up a male pyrrhuloxia, sometimes called a desert cardinal, standing at the top of a long-dead cactus trunk. The name comes from two Greek words meaning "flaming" and "curved", the latter referring to the shape of the bird's bill and the former to the bright red color of the face and breast. In the right light, I think these birds are even more impressive than their all-red cousins, the northern cardinals, which also inhabit the same desert habitat.
