A Pacific wren standing on a mossy stump

Small but Proud

Langford, British Columbia

Smaller than a chickadee, but as loud and as sassy as they come, the only thing that's subtle about the Pacific wren is its size. They spend a lot of time skulking in the undergrowth of the Pacific Northwest's temperate rainforests, but they aren't shy about popping up and singing either. Once they find a suitable stage, everyone in earshot knows that they're around. It's not as common to hear them in fall as it is in spring, but my October visit to Victoria yielded several active birds with pleasing autumn backgrounds, including this one.
