Black Oystercatcher
Victoria, British Columbia
Gently breaking waves and seaweed-covered rocks frame a black oystercatcher, one of the most common shorebird species found on the Pacific coast of British Columbia. While not as eye-catching as the American oystercatcher that inhabits the Atlantic coast of North America, black oystercatchers are nevertheless striking birds, thanks to the contrast between their light pink legs, black bodies, and orange-red bills. As an added bonus, the birds outside Victoria, BC are usually not camera shy at all, so photographing them doesn't require an extended approach and stalk that could just as easily end in the subject flying away. Point the camera at one, and there's a decent chance he'll do something interesting!
