On the Rocks
Victoria, British Columbia
The life of a turnstone is far from easy. Both North American species of these short and stocky shorebirds —ruddy turnstones on the Atlantic coast and black turnstones on the Pacific— find food by scrambling through the tidal zone, prying small crustaceans from the exposed rocks at low tide. Prey is plentiful, but feeding in such a place comes with its own risk: apart from the typical flying predators such as Cooper's hawks, there are waves to contend with, and just because the tide has gone out, it doesn't mean that the ocean will play by the rules. When a larger wave came in and broke over the rocks, I had this black turnstone lined up for a portrait shot.
The sea in and around Victoria isn't as imposing as the Atlantic surf off the coast of New Jersey (another winter shorebird spot that gets a regular soaking), but with the regular shipping traffic in the Salish Sea and its exposure to the Strait of Juan de Fuca, there's still plenty of wave action to keep a watchful eye on, especially since salt water and camera equipment don't go together nearly as well as salt water and birds.
