A song sparrow on a mossy stick with a fall color background

Song Sparrow

Langford, British Columbua

An autumn backdrop of greens, golds, and yellows frames a song sparrow in the undergrowth of the Pacific temperate rainforest, on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. The species is abundant throughout North America, but their coloration out west differs somewhat from the East Coast birds that I'm used to seeing at home. Western song sparrows are more of a dark, cocoa brown, while the eastern subspecies is lighter. Getting birds to pose in front of a tree in full fall colors was one of my objectives in BC, and I'm glad I was able to pull it off!
