Harlequin Duck
Victoria, British Columbia
Only in bird photography circles does a "Harley" refer to something that isn't a motorcycle. Harlequin ducks are present on both the East and West Coasts of the US and Canada, but the shooting spots in British Columbia far surpass, at least in my own opinion, anything that can be found in New Jersey or Newfoundland. Female harlequins are an unremarkable brown, not terribly different from the hens of other species, but the males are real head-turners with white facial markings, a dark blue neck and breast, and an orange-red body. As a sea duck species, these guys can dive at a moment's notice and pop up well past where my lens can reach, but they will also haul out of the water onto the rocks, which is where I caught this male on his way back into the ocean.
