A Pacific wren standing at the top of a mossy branch

Pacific Wren

Langford, British Columbia

Small but proud and more than a bit loud, there's no question about who's singing when there's a Pacific wren around. Even though the species is one of the most diminutive birds in the temperate rainforests of the Pacific Northwest, these little guys aren't shy about letting everyone else know who's in charge. Autumn and spring will see them surveying their territory and often yelling out at other birds who decide to come for an unauthorized visit.

The fall foliage season in British Columbia provides some beautiful backgrounds, such as the tree behind this bird that was in the process of changing from green to brilliant yellow. For this image, I was able to position the camera at an angle that filled the negative space with out-of-focus color.
