A short-billed dowitcher in a sleeping pose on the beach at sunset

Short-billed Dowitcher

Tierra Verde, Florida

With a flexible beak over four inches long, short-billed dowitchers are able to probe deep under the sand for their food, where other shorebirds can't reach. Why the name, then, if they have such an impressive bill? Because there's also a long-billed dowitcher, which has even more of a schnoz than this species.

Short-billed dowitchers undergo a impressive transformation in their breeding season, trading in their drab brown and grey feathers for blaze orange. Florida beaches provide them with an ideal spot to rest up and feed before the long flight north, and when the sunset hits them just right, they can look almost fire engine red. While this bird wasn't kind enough to show off his "short" bill, the moments before he went to sleep for the night were the sort of light and color show that keeps me coming back to the Gulf Coast over and over.
