A yellow-crowned night heron shaking out its feathers

Shake it Out

Tierra Verde, Florida

Do yellow-crowned night herons enjoy a bit of Taylor Swift now and then? I suppose anything's possible, but there's no doubt that they can "shake it off" with the best of them.

Night herons, as the name implies, do most of their hunting in the darker hours, but when there's a plentiful food supply around, they won't think twice about keeping a different timetable. As pretty as the yellow-crowned night heron is to our eyes, for the small shorebirds nesting in that strip of low beach grass, he's the worst thing that could possibly be there. Night herons, like all other members of the heron family, are voracious carnivores who will eat anything that can fit in their beaks, and sandpiper eggs are a special treat. Small wonder there wasn't anything taking a chance on building a nest in this spot!
