I made multiple visits to the same spot on a Rhode Island beach before I came away with this image. It took quite a while before the perfect combination of golden light, mirror-finish wet sand, distant wave spray, and a bird that actually held still came together in this photograph. Semipalmated plovers are extremely common on New England beaches and not particularly colorful in winter plumage, so I knew any composition I created with one would need that special something to send it over the top.
