Red-legged Honeycreeper

Boca Tapada

Throw a rock in the Costa Rican rainforest, and the odds are good you'll hit a red-legged honeycreeper, one of three resident honeycreeper species in the county. There's certainly no mystery where they get their name from, but despite the reference to honey, these birds are mainly fruit eaters. The individual here is a juvenile male who has almost completely molted into his adult plumage, in which the gray feathers on his forehead and throat will get swapped out for a brand new electric blue.
