Crimson-collared Tanager

Sarapiquí

Called "sangre de toro" (bull's blood) in Spanish, the crimson-collared tanager is a fairly large, stocky tanager that never fails to turn heads with its deep red breast and nape colors. It was one of my primary targets in Sarapiquí, a town in the Costa Rican lowland rainforest, so I was thrilled when this one came out and posed.
