Psychedelic Puffin
Elliston, Newfoundland and Labrador
An Atlantic puffin flies almost directly in front of the setting sun, and the reflections off the water create something truly unique. On this trip to Newfoundland and Labrador, I decided to experiment with shooting backlit subjects. The strong evening light coming from behind the bird lit up the puffin's webbed feet and wing feathers, but the real show comes from all the floating disco balls in the background. When sunlight reflects off the surface of the water, usually due to a small surface wave, the camera's circular optics turn that one point of light into a much larger shape that can range from oval to perfectly round. A physicist could probably explain how it happens much better, and with far more technical terms, but for me, there's only one way to describe the result: psychedelic.
