A puffin on rocks with sun shining off the water in the background

Newfoundland Sundown

Elliston, Newfoundland and Labrador

My goal for this trip to Newfoundland was to capture unique images of a species that just about every bird photographer has portraits and flight shots of. One thing I tried was shooting "backwards", orienting the camera directly towards the sun instead of keeping it at my back and in line with the subject. The technique can produce beautiful effects with water backgrounds, as the bright points in the water are diffused into colorful light balls. Here, evening sunlight through partial clouds glints off Trinity Bay, framing this Atlantic puffin at the Elliston nesting colony.
