A pine wabler in a pine tree

Pine Warbler

Montréal, Québec

Pine warblers are migratory songbirds, so it's a treat to have one that decides to forgo the trip south and spend the winter in a local park. It's even more fortunate when that bird is exceptionally tame and comes straight to peoples' hands, which isn't the standard behavior for warblers, though I suspect he might have picked it up from watching the chickadees. But whatever his reason for sticking around and giving up on both the migration and the standard warbler shyness around people, he's been a Montreal favorite all through the coldest months, braving the worst of the cold and snow with the aid of a few bird feeders, along with a whole lot of birdwatchers armed with offerings of seeds and suet.

I knew from the outset that I wanted to get this bird on a pine tree, which meant getting him to come out of the tree he normally sits in with a winter flock of chickadees and cardinals. It took several visits to the park before I was able to come away with this image of him, still aggressively fluffed up to guard against the cold at the end of February.
