A black-capped chickadee standing on a pine tree branch

Black-capped Chickadee

Montréal, Québec

The official bird of two US states and one Canadian province, black-capped chickadees are constantly on the lookout for anything edible in wintertime, and the seeds from a pine cone are as good a food source as any. At almost any park in Canada, the chickadees are the first to arrive and the last to leave, especially if there's peanuts or sunflower seeds on offer at one of the feeders. Their antics and plucky personalities have delighted birders for generations, and even though there's nothing rare about them, I'll never turn down the chance to photograph one in a cute pose. Just like with gulls, if you point a camera at a chickadee, chances are, he's going to do something interesting.
