A male lesser scaup in blue water at sunset

Lesser Scaup

Cambridge, Maryland

A lesser scaup drake, one of several diving duck species found on the Maryland Eastern Shore, paddles through a patch of calm blue water in the Choptank River. The golden-hour evening light causes the black head feathers to iridesce dark green. With several warm days already gone past when I drove out to Cambridge to photograph the ducks, the standard winter flock of wigeons, scaups, and canvasbacks had thinned out by more than half, with many of the birds already heading back out to sea for the spring and summer months. Fewer birds isn't always a bad thing when shooting waterfowl, since getting a single subject by itself in the frame is easier said than done when there's a hundred-duck mosh pit right in front of the camera, but I was surprised by how quickly everything had dispersed with the first real warm stretch of the season. At the time of this writing, about a week after the photo session, I'd put my money on them being gone until next winter.
