A lesser yellowlegs in water at sunset

Lesser Yellowlegs

Sainte-Martine, Québec

A lesser yellowlegs stands guard at the edge of the Châteauguay River in Québec, one of many spots in the province where shorebirds on their way south to the Gulf of Mexico and Central America stop over for rest and replenishment. These birds bide their time during migration, often leaving some time after most of the other species have continued on. The water in the main river channel is fast and turbulent, but at only a few inches deep, it's shallow enough for larger shorebirds to stand and feed in. In this image, the channel water is sky blue with visible streaks, while around the bird's feet, the slower flow of the shallows allows for the surrounding trees to reflect tones of gold and green.
