A northern gannet landing in backlight

Late Arrival

St. Bride's, Newfoundland and Labrador

A rare sunny evening at Cape St. Mary's, southwest of the Newfoundland and Labrador capital city of St. John's, showcases a northern gannet landing at the colony in beautiful backlight. Flying gannets are a dime a dozen here, with multiple nesting colonies seeing dozens of seabird arrivals and departures every minute, but the biggest variable is the weather. Fog from the nearby Grand Banks often rolls in during the summer nesting season, and while it can sometimes lurk just far enough offshore to not be problematic, other days can be completely socked in. On those occasions, it's difficult to see more than a few yards in front of your own face, and even though you can hear the birds, photographing them becomes a pipe dream. Thus, on the rare chance that the fog banks do lift, the conditions lend themselves to a completely different style of image.
