A northern gannet flying and carrying seaweed in its beak

Northern Gannet

St. Bride's, Newfoundland and Labrador

Gannets often return to their nests carrying something or other from the sea. That item is often fish for their chicks, but from time to time, one will come in with a beak full of seaweed to maintain its nest, all of which are packed densely along the cliffs and rock stacks of the North Atlantic coast. The background in this image gives an idea of just how cramped the living spaces in a gannet colony can be, with birds building nests and raising chicks within mere inches of each other. The quarters are close, and the smell can be powerful, but unlike Canada's other gannet colony in Gaspé, the birds are somewhat further away, and the sea breeze helps clear out some of the fishy miasma before it reaches the walking trail.
