Wings in Third
St. Bride's, Newfoundland and Labrador
I have always been drawn to the shapes that flying seabirds create in the air. With enough shutter speed, the forms that an airborne gannet can take while coming and going from the nest site are almost limitless, and in this case, the bird's wing position immediately reminded me of a ballet dancer performing "arms third", or the third fundamental arm position, with one arm held upright over the head and the other extended out. Professional dancers don't carry a mouthful of seaweed while performing, of course, but I've never seen a gannet starring in The Nutcracker either, so I don't think there's too much artistic liberty taken with the title!
Overcast light is one of my preferred weather conditions to work in, especially with white birds, since the diffused sunlight works like a giant soft box and every last detail is revealed. As long as I control the exposure and process the file properly, there won't be any burned highlights or blocked-up shadows.
