Ladder-backed Woodpecker

Green Valley, Arizona

The spines of a cholla cactus stay attached long after the plant has died and dried up. If you're unfortunate enough to back into or brush up against one, you'll notice immediately! For the woodpeckers who live in the desert, however, spiny perches are just as good as any other. The hard scales on their feet make short work of the plant's natural defenses, allowing them to climb up onto all different kinds of cacti, even the thorniest kinds that make humans yell and swear if we so much as touch them.

A rare cloudy morning south of Tucson, Arizona allowed for a soft-light shot of this male ladder-backed woodpecker, identifiable by the red on the top and back of the head. In a rare moment when he wasn't being chased away by the much larger and far more aggressive Gila woodpeckers, I was able to get this shot of him while he paused at the top of the dead cactus.
