Painted Bunting

One of the most brilliantly colored birds in North America, the male painted bunting is a head-turner wherever he shows up. It's possible to find occasional vagrants far out of their range in the northeast, but to actually photograph them well, there's only one place to go: southern Texas. Perched in a classic songbird pose, it's easy to see why this species's nickname in Spanish is sietecolores, or "seven colors".
