Grey Ghost
Adirondack Park, New York
They're known as a bold and brave companion to hikers in the northern forest, but Canada jays can be surprisingly quiet when they want to be. They will often glide over in complete silence, not betraying their presence until someone looks at the tops of the trees and sees a large grey bird where a few seconds before, there was nothing at all. They spend their time watching and waiting, and we typically don't find them as much as they find us. The end of November 2025 offered up a forest still largely free of snow, except for a few inches on the ground. The surrounding woods, like the birds that call it home, were mostly shades of grey, interspersed with the occasional spot of green from spruces and pines. Treetops are favorite perches for Canada jays, and it didn't take much to convince this one to pose for a moment.
