Black Oystercatcher

The fine spray of a breaking wave sets off the black body and orange-red bill of a black oystercatcher foraging along the shoreline on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Having spent several weeks trying to get the same effect in the past with a young semipalmated plover in Rhode Island (the results of which can be seen here), I knew I wanted to create a similar image with these larger shorebirds, but I wasn't convinced that a quick trip out west would be enough time to do it. I'd spent multiple days after work and on weekends down at the beach in New England, and only one of those outings actually produced what I was looking for. Yet as luck would have it, the very first morning I went out to the shore in Victoria, there were multiple oystercatchers feeding at low tide, and just enough breaking waves to allow for the possibility of a white spray background without constantly washing the birds off the rocks. More than a few shots wound up in the "delete" pile due to bad poses and head angles —birds will turn away from waves for the same reason that we do, namely, neither of us are keen on getting splashed directly in the face with cold water— but this oystercatcher stopped in the right spot at the right moment.
