Feeling Beaky

Boca Tapada

When a yellow-throated toucan sticks his two-toned schnoz right up in your business, it's hard to notice anything else. That beak doesn't actually weigh much at all, having about the same mass as a piece of balsa wood, but what it lacks in physical heft it more than makes up for in size, color, and utility. It's the ideal tool for grabbing food (which can and does include other birds, since toucans of this size don't restrict themselves to fruit), not to mention a real attention-getter for the folks behind the cameras.

Coming back to Boca Tapada in 2024 and rather lacking in close-ups of the biggest beaky bird in Tiquicia, I was thrilled to get a few minutes right up close with this toucan as he checked me out from a few different angles.
