Yellow-throated Toucan
Boca Tapada
Seeing colorful toucans up close is one of Costa Rica's best attractions, not to mention it provides some real benefits for bird photographers: we can create images with lots of fine feather detail, and capture birds in a variety of intimate and engaging poses that don't look as good when the subject is taking up less of the frame. As for dealing with perches, forget about 'em! While I do enjoy getting birds on the perfect perch, it's hard to argue with the impact of a close-up when the subject is this striking. With a bird like this yellow-throated toucan, the colors and shapes practically built the composition for me.
