Buff-throated Saltator
Sarapiquí
A small patch of tan on the throat is the distinguishing mark of the buff-throated saltator, one of several species in Costa Rica named for the Latin word meaning "dancer" (saltator or saltatoris). While technically in the tanager family, saltators tend to be on the larger side and don't sport the same bright colors that many tanager species have. I was able to capture this one giving me a classic over-the-shoulder pose in Sarapiquí, a place I was lucky to even get to in the first place due to a recent landslide closing the only highway from San José to the north.
