A common loon swimming in evening light

Evening on the Lake

Grantham, New Hampshire

When the thermometer read over ninety degrees without the humidity, the weather service was broadcasting a heat warning, and my better judgment said "you have a cold, just take it easy today", I still couldn't resist charging up the camera batteries and getting in the kayak when I saw the glassy water and golden sunlight developing on my favorite New Hampshire lake. A short paddle towards the south end found the resident male loon floating along, not doing much in particular apart from occasionally preening his feathers. I was able to use the kayak to position myself on the best angle for a clean background, keeping the multiple white rocks and dark trees out of the frame. Was it worth burning up in the hot sun? I certainly thought so.
