Wingstretch
Grantham, New Hampshire
A cloudy afternoon on a small New Hampshire lake saw this female common loon repeatedly diving for fish, feeding her chick (who decided to stay out of the frame), and shaking the water from her wings with a round of vigorous wing flapping. The light wasn't ideal for the kind of image that I was hoping to capture, but sometimes, the birds come up with something different all by themselves. The one advantage of overcast light is that it's much harder to blow out the whites on the loon's chest, which can easily get overcooked with exposure errors.
