The world is a big and dangerous place when you're a baby loon. At less than a week old, you fit into the palm of a human hand. Bald eagles are cruising the sky above, the water below is full of snapping turtles and largemouth bass, and the woods bordering the lake host otters red foxes. Every last one of these predators would just love to make a quick snack out of you, and that's to say nothing of other adults loons, who will dispatch you with prejudice if you come into their territory. So when one of those other loons shows up, your mom might just drop you off for safekeeping next to a human in a kayak, and then race off to chase the interloper away.
And sometimes, that human in a kayak has a camera.
