Undercling

Châteauguay, Québec

A downy woodpecker works over a tree branch covered in lichens on Île Saint-Bernard, a protected area on the St. Lawrence River just south of Montreal. So personable that they'll sit in your hand, downy woodpeckers are bird feeder favorites that will readily come to a variety of different foods. Wintertime is more difficult in terms of finding food, but any trip to the park will still see them clamboring up, down, and over branches in search of insects burrowed within.
