Hairy Woodpecker

Adirondack Park, New York

A female hairy woodpecker investigates an evergreen branch amid the snow in the Adirondacks. This photo session confirmed for me that if nuthatches are accustomed to people feeding them, and you happen to arrive without anything to offer, they will make their presence known by camping out on your head. Fortunately, the much larger woodpecker decided to stick to the branches instead.
