From the back, painted buntings live up to their name and then some. Getting the chance to photograph this species was one of the main reasons I made the trip from Canada to the far southern tip of Texas, since on the extremely rare chance that one of these birds were to ever show up here, there's no way it would behave in such a photogenic fashion! Most painted buntings are quite shy, but in the Río Grande Valley, they can sometimes be enticed to come out and pose.
