Talamanca Hummingbird

San Gerardo de Dota

In the Talamanca mountains of Costa Rica and Panama, the largest highland hummingbird is named for the hills it calls home. A uniform dark green in normal light, the male's brilliant purple and blue patches on his head and throat show their iridescence at just the right angle. As the biggest hummer in the cloud forest, the Talamanca is generally the boss bird, and doesn't hesitate to go after other smaller hummingbirds using his favorite feeders or sitting on his preferred branches.
