A female Talamanca hummingbird on a moss-covered branch, in the rain

Morning in the Cloud Forest

Tres de Junio

A female Talamanca hummingbird, the largest hummer species found in Costa Rica, waits out a passing shower on a delicate branch overgrown with old man's beard moss. The mountain highlands are hardly what most people associate with Central America —they're chilly, wet, windy, high-altitude zones that seldom get above 65 degrees— but that same cool and rainy climate gives rise to one of the best hummingbird photography spots I can think of. Even if all I'm doing is driving from A to B, if I go past this particular place, I make a point of stopping, grabbing some of the world's best coffee, and spending a few minutes with the hummers. This female Talamanca was one of the first to come in, and while the more colorful (and much more aggressive) male usually gets all the attention, I think she's pretty in her own way, with her speckles of green and yellow showing a gentle iridescence in the falling rain.
