A surfbird standing on the rocks by the sea.

Surfbird

Victoria, British Columbia

Soft light in British Columbia's capital of Victoria falls over a lone surfbird, a species of wader that spends its winters anywhere from northern BC and the Alaska coast to the southern parts of Chile. Shooting from a low angle isolated the background until it faded to an infinite nothingness of white and grey, while creating a similar effect with the rocks in the foreground. There aren't a whole lot of different colors in this image —it's primarily composed of greyscale tones and yellow, plus a dash of red and green in places— but keeping the composition simple allowed me to concentrate all the attention on the subject and avoid distracting elements from creeping in. I hadn't managed to photograph a surfbird before, despite seeing them on occasion in BC and California, so I was glad to come away with a pleasing image of one.
