Rock Wren

When an unexpected species pings all of the rarity alerts and you're only a few minutes away, consider it a gift from the bird gods! There is nothing uncommon about rock wrens in their proper range, which is the interior of British Columbia. In that part of the province, along with US states like Utah and Colorado, seeing a rock wren hopping around is hardly noteworthy. But the BC coast of Vancouver Island is hundreds of miles outside that range, and when this particular wren decided to spend some quality vacation time in Victoria, birders and photographers alike took note, and I was far from the only person with either binoculars or a camera hoping to get a look.
True to the species name, this rock wren was hanging out on some lichen-covered rocks. In truth, there's nothing about the image that screams "I took this a few feet from the Pacific Ocean"; it's the same habitat these birds naturally prefer, just a bit removed from where one would normally expect to find them. Most importantly, there were plenty of small holes and crags for the wren to take shelter in, a fact that came quite in handy when a passing Cooper's hawk tried to make a quick meal out of him. Raptors aren't concerned with a meal's rarity, they're just looking to eat.
